Master Thesis

A Web-Scale Analysis of Trends in AI-Generated and SEO Spam Content Using Human Annotation and Machine Learning

The thesis investigates the evolution of product review quality on web pages over a two-year period by deploying a robust two-model framework. A large-scale corpus of search query results was crawled and parsed using Resiliparse for robust HTML text extraction. For AI-generated text detection, the approach employs a supervised classifier trained on an external benchmark dataset, utilizing certain features to capture stylistic markers of machine- generated writing. In parallel, spam detection is performed using a fine-tuned BERT-based model, trained on manually annotated ground truth labels, incorporating an enriched multi-dimensional feature set. Finally, a temporal and correlation analyses examine how these quality signals evolve, assess their overlap, and provide insights into the integrity of product reviews within contemporary web ecosystems.

Trained in MERN stack with a front-end focus, demonstrating expertise in HTML, Tailwind CSS, and JavaScript through an interactive e-commerce website.
